Greece - Driving Restrictions for HGVs 14-16 August 2026
Truck Traffic Restrictions during the Assumption Day Holiday – August 2026
OFAE informs road freight transport operators and professional drivers that, as part of the traffic management measures introduced for the Assumption Day holiday period, traffic restrictions will apply to goods vehicles with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes on specific sections of the Greek national road network.
Dates and times of restrictions
Friday, 14 August 2026: 16:00 – 22:00
Saturday, 15 August 2026: 08:00 – 13:00
The above restrictions mainly apply to outbound traffic from major urban centres towards regional and popular summer destinations.
Sunday, 16 August 2026: 16:00 – 23:00
On Sunday, the restrictions will apply in the opposite direction, covering the main return routes.
Friday 14 and Saturday 15 August
The restrictions will apply on the following road sections:
- A8 Athens – Patras: from the Elefsina Toll Station to the Rio Toll Station, towards Patras.
- A1 Athens – Thessaloniki – Evzoni: from the Agios Stefanos interchange (Kryoneri) to the Raches Fthiotida interchange, and from the Makrychori Toll Station to the Leptokarya interchange, towards Thessaloniki.
- Thessaloniki – Nea Moudania National Road: from the Thermi bridge to the Nea Moudania interchange, towards Halkidiki.
- A11 Schimatari – Chalkida: from the junction with the A1 motorway to the Chalkida High Bridge, towards Chalkida.
- Thessaloniki – Kavala National Road: from km 11 to the Lion of Amphipolis junction, towards Kavala.
- A5 Ionia Odos: from the Rio–Antirrio Bridge to the end of the Ionia Odos motorway, towards Ioannina.
- A7 Central Peloponnese Motorway: from the Corinth interchange to the Sparta roundabout on the Kalamata ring road, towards Kalamata.
- A71 Lefktro – Sparta: from the Lefktro interchange to the Sparta interchange, towards Sparta.
- Antirrio – Arta – Ioannina National Road: towards Ioannina.
- Thessaloniki – Polygyros National Road (EO16): from the Thermi bridge to the Agia Anastasia interchange, towards Polygyros.
- A3 Central Greece Motorway: from the junctions with the A1 motorway to the Kalambaka interchange, towards Kalambaka.
- A52 / Amvrakia Odos: from Aktio to the connection with the Ionia Odos / Amvrakia interchange, towards Aktio.
Sunday 16 August – 16:00 to 23:00
Restrictions will apply on the corresponding road sections in the return direction, in particular:
- A8 Patras – Athens, towards Athens.
- A1 Thessaloniki – Athens, towards Athens.
- Nea Moudania – Thessaloniki, towards Thessaloniki.
- A11 Chalkida – Schimatari, towards Athens.
- Kavala – Thessaloniki, towards Thessaloniki.
- A5 Ionia Odos, towards Rio.
- A7 Central Peloponnese Motorway, towards Athens.
- A71 Sparta – Lefktro, towards Lefktro.
- Ioannina – Arta – Antirrio National Road, towards Antirrio.
- Polygyros – Thessaloniki National Road, towards Thessaloniki.
- A3 Central Greece Motorway, from Kalambaka towards Lamia – Athens.
- A52 / Amvrakia Odos, towards Ionia Odos / Amvrakia interchange.
Exemptions
Certain categories of vehicles are exempt from the above restrictions, including, among others, roadside assistance vehicles, Hellenic Post and press distribution vehicles, as well as vehicles transporting live animals and perishable food products, subject to the applicable conditions.
Exemptions also apply, among others, to vehicles transporting fresh fruit and vegetables and table olives, water tankers and fuel tankers supplying firefighting operations, public utility vehicles responding to emergency infrastructure failures, emergency vehicles, and other specific categories provided for in the relevant official decision.
