Farmers Launch Prolonged Blockades at Key Northern Border Crossings
PRESS RELEASES13 January 2026
Farmers are proceeding with prolonged blockades at major customs checkpoints in northern Greece, including Promachonas on the Greek–Bulgarian border and Evzonoi and Niki on the Greek–North Macedonian border.
According to the Athens News Agency (ANA-MPA), the mobilizations follow decisions taken during farmers’ general assemblies, where they confirmed their refusal to participate in a scheduled dialogue with the Prime Minister.
At the Promachonas checkpoint, farmers from the Serres region began a full blockade at 12:30 p.m., affecting both entry and exit for all vehicles, including freight trucks and private cars. The blockade is expected to last at least 24 hours, with its continuation to be reassessed at a further assembly.
At Evzonoi, farmers are implementing blockades from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. and again from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. The restrictions apply to all vehicles in both directions, with passage permitted only in emergency cases.
Meanwhile, at the Niki customs checkpoint, farmers announced a four-hour blockade starting at 7:00 p.m., affecting all freight trucks. In addition, the passage of private passenger vehicles will be suspended from 8:00 p.m. for a period of two hours.
In contrast, farmers in Nevrokopi, in the region of Drama, decided not to impose a blockade due to severe frost and safety concerns, as nighttime temperatures drop to as low as minus 13 degrees Celsius. A roadblock has instead been set up approximately 500 metres from the Exochi customs checkpoint on the Greek–Bulgarian border.
